Every year, up to 10 million tonnes of waste is discharged from land into the sea, 75% of which is plastic waste. In such a hostile environment, the North Sea and Baltic Sea in northern Germany are not immune to plastic pollution.

Scientists estimate that some 600,000 cubic metres of rubbish are stored on the Baltic Sea floor alone. This is equivalent to 1.5 times the volume of Cologne Cathedral, and the amount of hard-to-degrade plastic waste continues to increase.

To tackle plastic pollution in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, The German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (Deutscher Naturschutzring) launched a project in 2010 called „Meere ohne Plastik“, means “A sea without plastic”.

The Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union collaborates with fishermen and water athletes to collect data, organize beach and river bank cleanups, and support environmental monitoring in the North and Baltic Seas.

On the political and economic level, The Deutscher Naturschutzring is also actively promoting more advanced harbour and coastal waste disposal methods to prevent waste from reaching the sea.

It is worth mentioning that people’s efforts have paid off. After being extinct in Germany for several years, the once endangered white-tailed sea eagle returned to Germany in 2018 and settled and thrived in the states of Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Brandenburg.
