Seawater FGD is a reliable and efficient method in removing sulfur dioxide from flue gases in power plants and businesses.

What Are The Features Of Seawater FGD?

The natural alkalinity of saltwater then neutralizes it before being released into the environment (the carbonate-related system).

How Can Sulphur Dioxide Be Removed From Flue Gases?

Scrubbing sulfur dioxide with a cold sodium sulfite solution yields a sodium hydrogen sulfite solution.

Heating the solution reverses the reaction, forming sulfur dioxide and sodium sulfite solution.

How Effective Is Seawater FGD?

Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) or scrubbers remove sulfur from exhaust gases with efficiency ranging from 50% to 98%.

Wet scrubbers usually remove more, whereas dry scrubbers remove less.

How Seawater FGD Works?

The SO2 absorber is the core of seawater FGD.

The mist eliminator reintroduces the flue gas-borne drops into the operation.

The clean gas exits the absorber and goes to a cooling tower or wet stack.

The method has two major stages:

  •     Removal of SOx (HCl, HF)
  •     Treatment of the absorber effluent

The flue gas is brought into intense contact with saltwater in the absorption zone to remove sulfur oxides (SOx) and other acidic components (HCl, HF).

The seawater absorption zone is gaseous with air before returning to the sea to ensure segregated SO2 to sulfate.

The absorption zone seawater is gassed with air before returning to the sea to ensure sulfite oxidation.
