Troubleshooting and Solutions of Crane Telescopic Cylinder

Thank you for visiting this page. While testing our latest telescopic boom cranes, we discovered a problem.

We can’t wait to share with you how to solve the failure of crane telescopic cylinders.

Problem Description – The boom extension cylinder is moving out on its own when the joystick is in a neutral position.

Telescopic Cylinder Inspection Steps

The technician inspected the crane and report that:

– Checked the functions of the deck crane and found operating normally.

– Checked the telescopic cylinder’s first stage and found it extending out slowly with a joystick in the neutral position.

– Checked the counterbalance valve and found no external oil leaks.

– Checked the sequence valve visually and found no oil leaks.

– Adjusted the counter balance pressure and sequence valve pressures.

– Tried to synchronize the movement, and found no improvement.

Since the cylinders are of different sizes, it is necessary to lengthen the cylinders so that the same flow rate flows from the main control valve to all cylinders. As a result, we found the operation slow and with pressure. Despite the adjustments, we still found the cylinder slowly moving out for a small distance while in a neutral position.

I have to suspect that there may be an internal leak in the crane telescopic cylinder. Since the cylinders are mounted on the same circuit in series, it was impossible to identify which cylinder is leaking. We have to inspect each one.

Fortunately, crane operations are not affected due to the issue. However, the extension cylinder needs to be internal leak tested and necessary repairs to be carried out.

Required Repairs

After troubleshooting, we obtained the final solution.

In addition, there are problems with the sequence valve and counterbalance valve, and we will repair them by replacing them.
